My Review - Sabotaged

SABOTAGED, with its unique storyline and unpredictable twists, you really had to wait until the end of the book to know the whole truth.  The only negative is knowing SABOTAGED marks the end of the series.

A Great Series Full of Action and Romance!

Kirra Jacobs is beside herself with worry. Her uncle−a musher in the Alaskan Iditarod race−is missing. She sets out to find him only to be shadowed by Reef McKenna, her childhood nemesis.  When Kirra and Reef find her Uncle Frank, he lets them know that Kirra’s cousin, Meg, has been kidnapped and will be killed if Frank doesn’t do exactly as they say. Kirra and Reef−along with the rest of the McKenna siblings−join forces to figure out what Frank is being forced to do and where Meg is being held. While Kirra and Reef work together to hunt down clues, Kirra realizes her feelings for Reef are no longer fueled by contempt. The attraction she feels for him confuses her, but the man she sees in Reef is far different from the adolescent she grew up with.

Reef’s transformation has been slow, and though he realizes he has true feelings for Kirra, he knows her feelings for him teeter somewhere between irritation and tolerance. But that doesn’t matter. Her family is in trouble and he intends to do everything in his power to not only help Frank and Meg, but to keep Kirra out of harm’s way.  Unfortunately, the more they uncover, the more the evidence points to a catastrophic event that endangers more than just Kirra’s family.

I absolutely LOVED the entire Alaskan Courage series.  The McKenna clan is a fiercely protective and loyal bunch, but not without their difference and their scars.  It was nice to witness the transformation in Reef−the black sheep of the family and it was great to get one more glimpse at Cole and Bailey, Piper and Landon, Gage and Darcy, and Kayden and Jake. Each of their stories was gripping, action-packed, romantic, and memorable.

A great series! A must for romance/suspense junkies.

When tragedy strikes again−leaving Shaina homeless−Sloan Remington offers her not only a place to stay, but asks for her help taking care of his housekeeper who has suffered a fall. Offering to pay her for her duties is more than she can imagine, but Sloan insists it is only fair and brings her to his ranch. Shaina knows Sloan is a man with a stellar reputation, but is about to find out what a truly fine man he is.

Sloan Remington knows all about Shaina’s woes. Unbeknownst to her, Sloan has been keeping an eye on her because of the promise he made to her dying husband. His intentions towards Shaina are pure.  He wants to keep her safe, out of harm’s way, and free from the wagging tongues of Denver’s elite. Even though his intentions are to see to Shaina’s well-being, he can’t help but think of what life would be life with a woman like Shaina by his side. But Sloan is keeping his own secrets. Secrets he is sure will change the way the people of Denver and Shaina will look at him.

Though CURRENCY OF THE HEART was predictable, it did not take away from my enjoyment. Shaina is genuine at heart, never thinking she deserves more out of life. And Sloan is the consummate hero that wants nothing else but to take care and protect Shaina. The secondary characters of Mable, Jim, Abe, Elise, and Doc, add their own storylines and flare to the book. If you like romance and the historic West, you’ll definitely enjoy CURRENCY OF THE HEART

My Review - Somebody Like You

A Unique Storyline!

SOMEBODY LIKE YOU is an amazing love story born out of tragedy.

After the death of her husband in Afghanistan, Haley Ames is taking one day at a time, putting one foot in front of the other, and being the strong independent woman she has always been. But when she sees her husband on her front porch, she’s sure the Army has made a mistake and she’s been blessed with a miracle. Those feelings are quickly dashed when the man standing in front of her introduces himself as Stephen, her husband’s twin brother−a brother she never even knew her husband had. Haley wants nothing to do with Stephen. Looking at him only reminds her of all she’d lost.  But Stephen isn’t going to give up that easy. He has an unexplainable need to protect Haley and help her through the changes that are coming her way. Though they both must deal with the loss of a husband and a brother, they also have the chance at a bright future if they can only look beyond the pain.

I loved this story and the way the author handle this most unorthodox story line. With Haley so in love with the memory of her husband, I wasn’t sure how she would allow herself to explore feelings for Stephen without feeling a sense of betrayal. But Ms. Vogt handled this paradox quite well. Haley is strong and self-sufficient−absolutely the kind of female character I myself (I am an author) like to create.  But she also has a soft side and emotional needs that even she doesn’t know she desires to be filled. Stephen is the epitome of silent strength. Watching his feelings grow for Haley, knowing she might never return his affections was both gut-wrenching and moving.

I can’t say much more without giving away keys to the story. I will just say that I really enjoyed SOMEBODY LIKE YOU and recommend it whole-heartedly!

My Review - Mercy's Rain

A moving story!

MERCY’S RAIN has to be one of the most provocative Christian books I have ever read.

Mercy Roller’s life truly is a living hell. Her father−who is also the town’s pastor−rules his household with an iron fist and his own twisted, distorted form of righteous anger. Mercy’s mother and the people of Wadalow Mountain seem unable to stand against the Pastor’s tyrannical reign, and Mercy herself desires nothing more than to feel the love of a father. But what Mercy gets instead is the deplorable actions of a wicked man, a man who is anything but a messenger of God.  When her mother kicks her out of her home, Mercy embarks on a journey that takes her to another mountain community where she is faced with people who love, accept, and care for not only Mercy’s fragile heart, but her grieving soul.

MERCY’S RAIN is not a novel for the faint of heart. Though Ms. Sproles does not rely on rough language or graphic descriptions, her imagery sets scenes that are both evocative and haunting.  You will find yourself wincing and sighing out loud, wondering how much more Mercy can endure before she is set free from the cruel and harsh behavior meted out by her father.  Mercy hates her very name because it taunts her of the one thing both her earthly and heavenly father have never extended to her. I ached for Mercy when she finally found herself surrounded by good people, but her cynical mind and distrust of any man of God would not allow her to receive unconditional acceptance.  Mercy’s journey is heart wrenching because she feels unworthy of anything good and refuses to acknowledge that God is the epitome of good.  It’s a difficult process for Mercy to shed the hate that has blackened her heart, but Isabella, Terrance, and Preacher Samuel refuse to give up on Mercy until she finds the true meaning of her very name.

My Review - Love is Patient

I really enjoyed LOVE IS PATIENT. I especially enjoyed the gritty writing with which the story is told.

Melanie Brooks has sold her body for years, but now has the chance to start over. When she arrives at her ranch in Sterling Canyon, she is astounded at the gift that has been left to her. Feeling unworthy, she can’t help but think she has to work to receive what already belongs to her.  Pappy Henderson, the ranch foreman is patient and kind with Melanie. He is well aware of her past, but reminds her over and over again that nothing she’s done in life will disqualify her from the love of God.

Nicholas Henderson, Pappy’s nephew, is immediately intrigued by Melanie. She is strong and determined, and never shies away from hard work. Her womanly curves do not go unnoticed either. But, when Nicholas learns of her previous vocation, his feelings change. He will never see her as anything more than a tainted woman.

Pappy is heartbroken that his own nephew is unwilling to see past Melanie’s previous hardships. Nicholas’ treatment of Melanie only serves to reinforce her feelings of inadequacy and that she does not deserve what God wants to freely give her. But all that changes when Melanie’s past comes back to haunt her. She will do whatever is necessary to protect her new family from the unseemly people who are determined to destroy her.

A really enjoyed LOVE IS PATIENT. I appreciate and applaud any Christian author that writes a story with realism instead of sanitizing the story which only serves to insult the audience. There were a few threads in the story I felt should’ve been handled differently.  I don’t think−under any circumstance−Melanie would’ve allowed Charlotte to remain in the squalor of her past. Melanie had the means to rescue Charlotte and I don’t think she would’ve allowed herself to live in such opulence knowing what filth Charlotte was subjected to night after night. I was also waiting for Pappy to use all the imagery of what Melanie had inherited as an illustration of what God has prepared for us. We can’t work for it, we will never earn it. It is a gift−all we have to do is accept it. Other than that, I truly enjoyed LOVE IS PATIENT and would recommend it to anyone who loves the old west.

My Review - Beowulf

A Must Read Series!

An amazing end to an amazing series. Ronie Kendig’s writing is storytelling at its best. The only negative thing about BEOWULF is that I knew I was reading the last book in the series and I didn’t want it to end.

Timbrel Hogan is tough, single-minded, and above all else−hates men. That is, all men but her Bullmastiff, Beowulf. The explosives detecting dog is the only companion Timbrel needs−at least that is what she tells herself. Events from her past have shaded Timbrel’s outlook on life and because of that, she refuses to let her guard down where men are concerned. But her hard-as-nails, man-hater persona doesn’t deter Tony “Candyman” Van Allen.

Tony, a Green Beret, has made it his goal to win Timbrel over. Being teamed together on a few missions, Tony knows he can change Timbrel’s mind if he’s only given a chance.  Unfortunately, the walls Timbrel has erected seem impenetrable, especially since they are guarded by a behemoth of a dog that has taken a considerable disliking to Tony.

When a routine mission goes sideways, and Beowulf is blamed for a false positive, tensions mount. But Timbrel knows Beowulf was right. And her determination to prove him right gets her tangled up in a larger plot than anyone could have imagined. Even though Tony and Timbrel continue to butt heads, Timbrel’s attraction for Tony escalates. She’s just not sure if she can offer all that it takes to be that someone special in Tony’s life.  When a mission turns dire, Timbrel opens herself up to Tony, but is it too little too late?

This was a FANTASTIC series. One that I simply devoured. The characters Kendig has created are definitely your all-American hero type men, and you independent−don’t take no crap−women. The sparks that fly don’t just happen on the battlefield. Tony is very charismatic while Timbrel is quite icy. But when the two are together, they fuel a fire even they can’t control. If you like action, adventure, suspense, romance, and hold-your-breath drama, you must read the A Breed Apart series. Then follow it up with The Quiet Professional’s series. You won’t be disappointed.

 

 

My Review - The Trouble with Patience

THE TROUBLE WITH PATIENCE is the first installment in the Virtues and Vices of the Old West series. Though the characters were likeable, the story seemed to drag at times.

Patience Cavanaugh is insecure about her looks and feels that love has passed her by. Not wanting to dwell on what she doesn’t have, Patience puts all her energies into fixing up the broken-down boardinghouse her grandmother has left her.  Patience enjoys the people of Nevada City, all but Marshal Jedidiah Jones. When she publically interferes with his handling of a criminal, the Marshal put her in her place.

Jedidiah Jones is fighting demons from his past. Once a vigilante, he is now the town Marshal doing what he can to keep Nevada City crime-free. When Patience Cavanaugh rebukes him publically he sees her as nothing more than a meddling woman.  But his feelings soon change.

As Patience and Jedidiah two-step around each other, an attraction develops between them. But they both struggle with insecurities that keep them emotionally distant. Between Patience working on her boardinghouse and Jedidiah trying to round up wrestlers, they convince themselves they are too busy for a relationship. But soon, Jedidiah takes steps towards Patience hoping to convince her they should be together.

THE TROUBLE WITH PATIENCE was a sweet story, I just didn’t feel like it had any momentum. The storyline, the interaction between characters, even the plotline, seems to move at a pace that had me skimming from page to page. The dialogue between Patience and Jedidiah sometimes seemed a bit forced and at other times out of character. Once again, I nice story, just not a captivating story.

My Review - Talon

A book with bite!

TALON – another great edition to my Kendig library! Fast-paced, strong characters−you can’t help but fall in love with, and a storyline that insists on your full attention because there are clues in the tiniest of details.

Aspen Courtland refuses to believe Austin−her MIA brother−is dead. Even though the Marines have written him off, she insists he’s alive and plans to prove it with the help of her brother’s tracking dog, Talon.  Unfortunately, the attack that supposedly took Austin’s life has left Talon suffering his own form of PTSD. But Amber refuses to allow that to deter her.  When Dane Markoski contacts Amber with news about her brother’s whereabouts, she is ready to jump into action and search for him, but Amber’s team at A Breed Apart training center have their reservations about Markoski and his plan to find Austin.

Dane Markoski has his own stake in finding Austin Courtland, and he knows his only hope of doing so is having Talon, his tracking dog, on his team.  Unfortunately, working with Aspen goes against his rule of never working with women. But he has no choice.  If he hopes to find his own answers, Aspen has to be part of the plan.

What ensues is a kaleidoscope of plots, subplots, assumed identities, and chemistry so strong even Dane isn’t sure he can stick to his guns and keep things professional between him and Aspen. Aspen admittedly has lost her heart to Dane, even though Dane continues to warn her he can’t be trusted. As Aspen struggles with the idea that her brother has abandoned her, Dane struggles with who he is and what he’s become.

I thoroughly enjoyed TALON!  Though the subplots were cryptically unveiled throughout the book−making the rhythm of the story choppy at times−it was easy enough to see where Ms. Kendig was leading her readers so it didn’t interfere with my enjoyment of the story. Aspen is naïve in the sense that she only wants to see the good in people, but she’s also smart, determined, and definitely has skills of her own. Dane is emotionally haunted and keeps that part of who he is locked up from others to see. Instead, he relies on his instincts and training to move him forward without getting emotional invested, or so he tries. But Aspen is slowly chipping away at the walls Dane has erected making him almost believe he could fall in love.  Aspen and Dane are great as the hero and heroine, but so are the other characters that continue to appear in this series. Timbrel, Watterboy and Candyman, though secondary characters, definitely add to the heart and soul of what it means to be part of a team and watching each other’s six.

I can’t wait to read BEOWULF, the last book in the series, and find out what makes the belligerent man-hater, Timbrel, tick.

My Review - TRINITY

The start of an amazing series!

TRINTY, book one in the A Breed Apart series is exciting, suspenseful, and romantic.  What else would you expect from a Ronie Kendig book?

Heath Daniels’ military career is over.  After suffering a traumatic brain injury in a bombing in Afghanistan, Heath is discharged from the army.  His only saving grace, Trinity−his military war dog−refuses to be handled by anyone else and is retired, giving Heath his partner back.  Together, Heath and Trinity end up at the A Breed Apart training facility where war dogs and their handlers get a second chance to show the world their worth and share what God has done in their lives. Serving as a morale booster and spokesman for the A Breed Apart organization, Heath finds himself back in Afghanistan on the same base with his former team. Angry that God has allowed him to be sidelined, he can’t argue the fact that he’s not healthy enough to be back in action.  Atrocious headaches and unexpected blackouts deem him a risk to himself and the members of his former team.

But all that is about to change.

When intelligence officer Darci Kintz is captured and missing somewhere in the brutal Hindu Kush mountain range, Trinity is notably the only dog that can handle the extreme terrain and temperatures−and Heath is the only man who can handle Trinity. There is more at stake than just an extraction. Heath and Darci are not strangers, and though their time together was extremely brief, Heath wants nothing more than to find Darci and see if a relationship is in the cards for a wounded warrior and a international spy.

I am definitely on a Kendig kick right now.  I guess that’s the dangers of buying a whole series at the same time.  The A Breed Apart series is just as electric as Ms. Kendig’s The Quiet Professional series−they even have overlapping characters. Of course, the intensity is now three-fold since not only do you−as the reader−worry about the two main characters, but now there is a canine involved in every precarious shootout, avalanche, sniper fire, and bombing. I love the characters that Ms. Kendig creates.  They are people on honor and integrity, but far from perfect. While Darci’s background is rather complex, Heath’s is quite simple. He has an uncle back in the states, but it is clear Trinity is his whole life . . . until Darcy comes along and rattles his world.

Next Stop . . . TALON, book two in the A Breed Apart series.

My Review - Hawk

EXCEPTIONAL!

HAWK, book two in The Quiet Professionals series quickly took off where Raptor 6 left off.  And I do mean quickly!

Brian “Hawk” Bledsoe is nothing if he isn’t a man of his word.  But, he never imagined making a promise to an Afghan woman would nearly cost him his career. 

Fekiria Haidary has been a pain in his side since meeting her.  Even though she is a cousin to his team leader’s girlfriend, she has made it abundantly clear she hates Americans, which includes Hawk.  As luck would have it, Hawk gets in a bar fight protecting Fekiria. Having been warned already about his hot-headed temper, this is the final incident that sends him home as a disciplinary measure and takes away his rank.

When Hawk returns to Afghanistan he’s not allowed back on the team. He has to prove himself all over again and show the brass he has his anger issues under wraps. His main objective is to stay out of trouble and away from the woman who’s nothing but bad luck.  Unfortunately, that’s not to be.  With their team being targeted, Raptor sets out to find the person planting the corrupt intel that continues to put the team in harm’s way.  Not in his wildest dreams did Hawk think he would find Fekiria in the middle of a firestorm protecting young girls from the Taliban and certain death. Knowing he’s their only hope, Hawk must assist Fekiria and the girls over a treacherous mountain range in frigid conditions as others search to kill them. When he finds evidence and information that proves his team is in danger, he has to make a decision: save the girls or his team.

HAWK is just as powerful as RAPTOR 6, with maybe just a little more friction and a tad less romance. Even though Hawk hates Fekiria for the trouble she’s caused him, he sees a woman of strength, courage, and self-sacrifice as she does all she can to save the young girls in her care. Fekiria has grown up her entire life hating Americans but her bitterness begins to lessen when she sees the lengths Hawk will go to, to ensure the safety of her and the girls. Both parties refuse to admit they have feelings for each other, but sometimes words are not necessary.

I can’t wait to read FALCON, coming Spring 2015!

My Review - Raptor 6

RAPTOR 6, book one of The Quiet Professionals series was so intense, I found myself clenching my chest and gasping in sympathetic pain. An incredible start to what I anticipate to be a great series.

Captain Dean Watters heads his Special Forces team with unwavering focus. His team is his family and he lives to serve his country.  When super-secure computers go missing with information that will compromise U.S. military intelligence, he and his team do all they can to secure the computers before they can be hacked by the enemies of the U.S.

Few know that Zahrah Zarrick is more than a missionary teacher. With skills in quantum cryptology she becomes an unwilling target of those who have taken the missing computers. When Dean realizes she is in danger, he and his team are too late to protect her.  She has been taken captive and now it is up to Dean and his team to find her.  Complicating matter more is the fact that Dean has lost his heart to Zahrah. When he realizes the only way to rescue her is to become a captive himself, he must reach down deep to his very core, knowing he might have to sacrifice his life for hers.

All I can say is WOW! Ronie Kendig as done it again. The intensity of RAPTOR 6 is truly griping. Some scenes might be too intense for some people but it definitely leans to the realism of the tragedies of war. I love the relationship that forms between Dean and Zarhrah and how they drew strength from each other.  I also enjoyed the rapport and banter between the team members of RAPTOR 6.  They epitomize the definition−a band of brothers. I can’t wait to read HAWK, book two in the series.

My Review - SWAY

SWAY by Amy Matayo is unique in every sense of the word even though the premise is based on the typical opposites attract storyline. But, it is how extremely opposite Kate and Caleb are that make this book a page-turner and difficult to put down. I can’t say much without giving away the main plot, but I will say, the chemistry between Kate and Caleb is pure energy. 

Caleb has seen his share of trouble but his friends and his faith have turned him around. Kate has been raised in a secure and loving home and genuinely respects her parents and what they stand for. Sounds like your typical romance book, right?  But SWAY is anything but typical.

Caleb and Kate meet in a bar.  Caleb is there encouraging his friends to be more social while Kate and her friends are celebrating her twenty-first birthday by getting drunk and picking up guys. Not the setting for most Christian romance books. When Caleb steps in to save Kate from an opportunist, she is unaware that he has protected her from what could’ve been a tragic night. When she wakes up the next morning with Caleb in her apartment, she mistakenly thinks he’s taken advantage of her.  After Caleb sets her straight, she realizes what a genuinely nice guy he is. There mutual admiration comes to an abrupt end when they find out what it is they have in common put them at odds with each other.

Even though both Caleb and Kate know their differences are too great to have any kind of relationship, they continue to be drawn to each other like moths to a flame. Caleb has an unorthodox way about him that intrigues Kate, making her question all that she’s been told.  But with her parents in the national eye, Kate’s very personal decision regarding her beliefs becomes a very public choice; and it just might ruin Caleb reputation as well.

I feel this review might sound a bit disjointed, but I don’t want to give too much away.  Let me just say that SWAY is not your average Christian romance book and I am so glad that it’s not.  SWAY pushes the boundaries which I applaud wholeheartedly. It’s got a great Christian message about differences and acceptance, but Ms. Matayo does not sanitize her story to in the process. 

A must read!! 

 

DEFINITELY ON MY BEST READ LIST!!!

BEYOND 5 STARS!!!

I don’t think there are enough adjectives to describe what an exceptional story Sally Bradley has penned in KEPT. Riveting, authentic, touching, painful, are just a few that come to mind. Easily one of the best novels I’ve ever read.  This is not a typical Christian romance book.  It is not set in the sanitized world most have come to expect from the Christian genre.  That’s what makes KEPT so amazing.  It’s real, it’s relevant, not sterile and watered down to insure the Christian community is not offended. The story of redemption is front and center even if the reader must endure the crudeness of realty.

From outward appearances, Miska Tomlinson looks like she has it all together.  A freelance editor who lives in a luxury condo with a view of the Chicago lakefront, she waits patiently for Mark−the man she loves−to leave his wife so they can have a life together. Dillon Foster is new to the building and an enigma to Miska.  A spiritual man she can’t help but be drawn to, though their outlooks on life are completely different.

Dillon’s life is cemented in his faith and his values, and though Miska’s lifestyle is completely opposite of his, he can’t help but be fascinated by her. He spends time trying to get to know her, understand her, and show her she is selling herself short. Thinking they are building a relationship, he is devastated when he finds out exactly how Miska has chosen to live her life.  He does his best to keep his distance, but somehow their paths continue to cross.

Miska’s life is quickly spiraling out of control.  Grasping for answers, she opens herself up to the God that Dillon vows his allegiance to.  Though she finds a peace she has never experienced before, she can’t help but feel disheartened knowing she will never have the love of the one man she truly respects.

An amazing book!  An amazing story!

As a fellow writer I am excited to see incredible stories like KEPT breaking stereotypes and challenging the boundaries of Christian fiction.  The self-publishing and independent publishing markets are shedding light on talented Christian artist that write with depth and realism without sacrificing the power of God in the lives of those others might choose to ignore.

Well done, Ms. Bradley!

My Review - The Song

I thoroughly enjoyed THE SONG by Chris Fabry, and I can’t wait until the movie releases next month (Feb 2015)

Jed King lives in the shadow of his father, a legendary country singing star. Though he wants to be known for his own songs, people expect him to sing the hits his father made famous. Unfortunately, Jed’s father wasn’t known only for his music. His broken marriage and the affair that produced Jed was tabloid fodder and something Jed has always had to live with.  Determined to make it on his own merit, Jed must play venues no matter how small or paltry them may seem. When he’s booked to perform at a small festival at a middle of nowhere vineyard, he is enchanted by Rose, the vineyard owner’s daughter.

Rose and Jed’s attraction for each other is immediate and all-consuming. With their faith in God and commitment to each other, they embark on a whirlwind ride when one of Jed’s songs hits it big. Jed is more than aware of the lures and temptations that can happen on the road, but his love for Rose is strong and pure. Jed thrives on the road and draws his energy from his fans. Rose begins to feel like she and their son are taking a backseat to Jed’s career, causing a strain on the relationship whenever Jed’s is home.  He assures Rose that nothing will ever drive them apart.  That is, until Shelby Bale joins Jed’s tour.

Shelby is everything Jed is not.  While Jed is known as the conservative, love song balladeer, Shelby is known as a honkytonk wild child.  The unorthodox chemistry between Jed and Shelby catapults their careers to the next level, leading to an extended tour and more time away from Rose. It isn’t long before Shelby introduces Jed to the wilder side of living, causing him to lose focus, control, and everything he has built with Rose.

With their lives unraveling, Jed and Rose must decide if what they once had is worth fighting for, or is it too late for them to get back the love they once shared.

THE SONG is loosely based on the Song of Solomon and the downfalls of the foolish man. At times it was difficult to read because I didn’t want to hate Jed. But the pain he caused Rose seemed unforgivable. THE SONG painted a picture of what many marriages suffer at the hands of selfishness and pride. When “I” becomes greater than “us” someone is most certainly going to get hurt.  Putting the pain aside and moving forward is a hard cross to bear, but when forgiveness is all that stands between you, your faith, and your family, the excruciating road must be walked, and prayerfully both parties will emerge on the other side.

My Review - At Home in Last Chance

AT HOME IN LAST CHANCE, is the third installment in the A Place Called Home series.  Though the plot is simple, the characters are rich, especially when we get to catch up with characters from the previous two installments.

Kaitlyn Reed’s life has been one bad decision after another.  After visiting her brother in Last Chance six-months ago, Kaitlyn took off, leaving her seven-year-old daughter behind. Now Kaitlyn is back in Last Chance, trying to gain the trust of her brother and the love of her daughter.  She is determined to get her life in order, but her self-destructive ego continues to remind her she is nothing but a screw-up.

Steven Braden was much like Kaitlyn.  He too ran when life got tough, but he’s back in Last Chance trying to mend his relationships with his family before he goes into the police academy.  The people of Last Chance don’t expect much from Steven, and always the charmer, Steven decides to prove them wrong.

Kaitlyn and Steven continue to cross each other’s path.  It’s not hard in a small town, but neither one of them think much about the other.  Steven’s grandmother warns him away from Kaitlyn knowing she has enough to deal with without Steven complicating things.  And Kaitlyn’s brother knows all too well that Steven is not someone he wants spending time with his sister.  But eventually, Kaitlyn and Steven acknowledge they are cut from the same cloth, and find themselves cheering each other on to prove everyone else wrong.

AT HOME IN LAST CHANCE was just as enjoyable as the previous two books in the series.  It was great to see Kaitlyn redeem herself from where we left her in book two.  And Steven is the typical screw-up that cares more about what people say about him then he leads on.  I liked the bantering between these two characters, and the added support of the other residents of Last Chance.

My Review - Hidden Agenda

Lisa Harris has done it again. HIDDEN AGENDA is packed with action, suspense, drama, great characters, and a great romance.

In book three of the Southern Crimes series, we find out that Michael Hunt is very much alive.  With his cover blown, suffering from a beating, and facing death for a second time, he is rescued in the nick of time by Olivia and Ivan Hamilton.  Michael wants nothing more than to get home to his family and the help they can provide, but the cartel has a hit out on him and corrupt officials in the Atlanta police department want to silence him as well.  It’s not enough that he has to figure out how to clear his name without getting caught, but now he has to make sure Olivia and Ivan are safe as well.  Complicating matters even more is the attraction he feels for Olivia.  She’s strong and beautiful, and just so happens to be the daughter of the kingpin he’s spent eight months trying to take down. 

What in sues is a page-turning odyssey of close calls and nick-of-time rescues.  Michael and Olivia are as strong as they are vulnerable.  Both of them see their opposite worlds standing between them and any future they might have, but it doesn’t diminish their quickly growing feelings for each other.

I really loved HIDDEN AGENDA, as I did the other two books in the series.  The action is riveting and the characters are warm and genuine.  It was also a treat to get to check back in with Avery, Jackson, Emily, and Mason.  I will definitely be looking forward to Ms. Harris’ next series.

My Review - Dead Gorgeous

DEAD GORGEOUS was not necessarily my cup of tea, but if you like the old, traditional whodunit stylings of Agatha Christie or say, Murder She Wrote, I think you will find this novel entertaining.

Set in the world of fashion, D.I. Angela Costello must find out who killed Kirsty Manners. But the more Angela digs, the more she finds that Kirsty was not just a beautiful and aspiring model, but also a conniving and opportunistic person, with enemies at every turn.  Angela and her team must piece together what little evidence they have in order to find their killer.  Working with a meticulous and keen talent of unearthing clues that are barely there, D.I. Costello narrows down the list of possible suspects until only one stands out.

Though DEAD GORGEOUS was intriguing as a whodunit, the characters just didn’t seem that engaging to me.  The interaction between them never really evoked any emotion or connection.  The plot and the precision was there but the characters just seemed to fall a little flat.  DEAD GORGEOUS is a striped down mystery where the suspects and clues take center stage.

My Review - The Quarryman's Bride

THE QUARRYMAN’S BRIDE by Tracie Peterson, was entertaining, but a bit on the slow side.

Emmalyne Knox is set to wed the love of her life, Tavin MacLachlan, when a devastating accident strikes her family.  The custom of the youngest daughter caring for her parents has fallen to Emmalyne. And because of that, she is no longer free to marry Tavin.  Out of obedience to her parents, she moves with them leaving Tavin and the broken pieces of her heart behind.

Eleven years later, the Knox family returns to St. Cloud, Minnesota.  Emmalyne’s mother has never recovered from the tragedy that tore her family apart and lives in a daze and poor health.  Emmalyne’s father is cold-hearted and unfeeling.  He rules his family with an iron fist and sharp words, making life unpleasant for Emmalyne and her brother.  But returning to St. Cloud is almost more than Emmalyne can bear.  Knowing her path will cross with Tavin’s will make an already difficult life even harder.

Tavin has never recovered from losing Emmalyne.  He hates her father for going back on his word, and he hates Emmalyne for not running away with him.  Now that they are both back in St. Cloud, he feels his anger and hatred reignited, even though his love for Emmalyne has never waned.  But nothing has changed.  Emmalyne is still out of reach.

THE QUARRYMAN’S BRIDE was a good story . . . I enjoyed it, but the momentum was a bit slow.  Some of the sub-storylines seemed distracting and unnecessary to the main plotline.  I liked the characters well enough, it just seemed like something was missing.  But this will not detour me from reading THE MINER’S LADY, book three in the Land of Shining Water series.

My Review - The Icecutter's Daughter

THE ICECUTTER’S DAUGHTER by Tracie Peterson is a warm romance with characters you can’t help but like.

Merrill Krause has been outnumbered her entire life.  Caring for her brothers and her father hasn’t left her with much time for self, but she doesn’t mind.  She loves working alongside her brother’s, and caring for her father’s horses brings her joy.  But, sometimes Merrill wonders what it would be like to have a suitor pursue her, that is, if they could get past her imposing brothers determined to protect her.

Rurik Jorgenson has come to help his Uncle Carl in his furniture business.  When he meets Merrill he is immediately intrigued.  She is strong and independent, and unlike any woman he’s ever known.  Spending time helping her brother’s bring in the ice harvest is his excuse to be near Merrill and soon their attraction for each other grows.  But when Rurik’s previous fiancée comes to town making outrageous claims against Rurik, his relationship with Merrill is threatened. 

I thoroughly enjoyed THE ICECUTTER’S DAUGHTER.  Merrill is a strong character and Rurik is genuine and kind.  I loved watching their relationship develop.  The secondary characters in the book added to my overall enjoyment of the story.  As some have said, the story might have been predictable, but there were a few twists I didn’t expect.  Next up, THE QUARRYMAN’S BRIDE.

My Review - Raina's Choice

RAINA’S CHOICE, the third installment in the Western Justice series just didn’t seem to have the same momentum as the previous two books.

RAINA will do anything to get away from her brutish brother-in-law and the sordid Louisiana saloon she works in, even team up with a stranger headed Fort Smith.  Wanting to find the father she’s never known, Raina is willing to confront the dangers of Indian Territory with the help of Tyler Kincaid. 

Tyler Kincaid has just broken out of a Mexican prison where he was wrongfully imprisoned.  Though he is quite sick, his intentions are to team up with Judge Parker and become one of his Marshal’s. 

Knowing Kincaid is her only chance to get out from under the thumb of her brother-in-law, Raina comes up with an idea to get Tyler out of prison. As Tyler’s health weakens, Raina must nurse him back to health if they hope to accomplish their goals. 

Though I wanted to like RAINA’S CHOICE, I felt the characters came across as pretty flat.  Their conversations seemed monotone, neither of them showed much emotion.  The story seemed to progress slowly and without much excitement.  The author had all the right tools: desperate situations, love triangle, lives in danger-but he didn’t take full advantage of these plotlines.  I did appreciate the struggle Tyler had as he came to grips with God and His plan for his life.  But as for the rest of the story, I felt like it went through the paces without really capitalizing on all the groundwork the author laid out.  

My Review - Sabrina's Man

SABRINA’S MAN is the second installment in the Western Justice Series.

Sabrina Warren is your typical spoiled southern belle.  Used to getting whatever she wants, Sabrina pays little mind to anyone but herself.  But, when her younger sister is romanced by a wicked con-man in disguise and is whisked away to parts unknown, Sabrina’s love for her sister fuels her determination to see her sister safely returned home.

Waco Smith hasn’t had the easiest life, but things are looking up.  As a partner in a successful hardware store and courting the lovely Alice Malone, Waco sees nothing but blue skies ahead.  That is until he is forced to rejoin the Confederate Army.  While away, his life is changed, turning Waco into a bitter and angry man.  Turning to a life of crime, he finds himself serving time in jail when his act of heroism garners him the possibility of a shortened sentence. If he will help Miss Sabrina Warren free her sister from the clutches of the vile Trey LeBeau, he will be pardoned for his crime. 

Sabrina hates the fact that she has to rely on a criminal to help her find her sister.  But she has no alternatives.  Waco Smith is the only person who can work himself into LeBeau’s gang and devise a plan to free her sister.  Along the way, Sabrina is transformed from spoiled debutante into a gritty and determined woman.  Her impression of Waco undergoes a transformation as well, one that has her heart tied in knots.

Gilbert Morris has a very deliberant writing style.  Dividing the book into four parts, each section concentrates on a timeframe in each of the lead characters’ life, setting up the story for the time that their two paths cross.  At first I found this distracting, now I realize it is just the style in which Morris prefers to write.  Much like ROSA’s LAND, Morris takes a man that is not your typical hero type, and turns him into just that.  Waco is quite and solemn, and his feelings for Sabrina grow slowly and without his permission.  He sees himself as unchangeable and unworthy of her love, but that doesn’t keep him from protecting Sabrina and wanting to see her sister safely home. 

The Western Justice series is unique in its delivery, but it grows on you.  I have already started RAINA’S CHOICE, and I’m excited to be treated to another fascinating story from Gilbert Morris.

My Review - Rosa's Land

3.5 out of 5 stars

ROSA’S LAND is the first installment in the Western Justice series by Gilbert Morris.  If you enjoy the old west coupled with romance, this is a series for you.  Though the cadence in Gilbert Morris’ writing is a bit unique, with the book broken up into four different sections, it was a quirk I was willing to overlook because the characters drew me in.

Lafayette Riordan is a consummate momma’s boy.  Raised by his mother to be an artist and student, he is nothing like his tough and ready brother’s. Though Lafayette shows no outward signs of discontent, inwardly he longs to handle a pistol and work alongside the marshals under Judge Isaac Parker’s leadership.  His family is shocked when he strikes out on his own to accomplish his dream.  Though Lafayette does join up with Judge Parker’s marshals, his only jobs entail shoveling stalls, washing dishes, and cooking.  But Lafayette knows one day he will get his chance.

Rosa Ramirez and her family have left Texas behind hoping for an easier life on the Oklahoma ranch of her grandfather’s.  But Rosa finds out life is just as hazardous among horse thieves and renegades.  When the ranch is ambushed by outlaws and a ranch hand is killed, Rosa asks Judge Isaac Parker for assistance.  Rosa is livid when the only help Parker is willing to offer is a fragile looking stable hand.

Rosa does little to hide her disdain for Riordan.  But it doesn’t take long for Riordan to prove there is more to him than meets the eye.  Quietly, he establishes himself as quite a gunman and slowly earns not only the respect of the Ramirez clan but more importantly Rosa’s admiration.  When an outlaw Riordan has bested decides to take revenge, Rosa becomes the pawn he uses against Riordan.  It’s up to Riordan to save her, even if it means walking into a trap no man can survive.

I was a little frustrated at first by the way Gilbert writes in sections.  There are four distinct parts to this book and Riordan and Rosa don’t meet up until the end of part two.  To me it seemed like glorified backstory.  But once our hero and heroine met, I was hooked.  Riordan is the strong silent type while Rosa is a firecracker.  As these two learn how to interact with each other, a slow, thoughtful romance develops.  I loved the way Gilbert created such an unassuming character in Riordan, and grew in him all the elements of a true hero.  It was a refreshing twist.  It’s easy to make a heroine and readers fall in love with tall, dark, and handsome, but it takes talent to make us fall for the qualities that make up a true man.

 

My Review - Tidewater Inn

TIDEWATER INN had a unique storyline with plenty of suspense and romance.

Libby Holladay and her partner Nicole renovate and save buildings with historical value.  It’s Libby’s true passion in life.  Well, Libby’s life has just turned upside down.  Thinking her father died when she was young, Libby has just found out his death was more recent and that he left her an inheritance in the form of an old seaside house.  She’s also just learned she has a half brother and sister that want nothing to do with her, and her business partner, Nicole, has been kidnapped before her eyes.  Feeling overwhelmed by all that is going on around her, she also learns she is the sheriff’s main suspect in Nicole’s disappearance.  Finding Nicole is Libby’s top priority even though her own life is being threatened.  Though Coast Guard Lieutenant, Alec Bourne, makes it clear he’s suspicious of Libby, he’s the only one that seems willing to help her find Nicole.  What follows is a race against time to find Nicole and her kidnappers, before they find Libby.

I really enjoyed TIDEWATER INN.  Though I read the three books that comprise the Hope Beach series out of order, it did not lessen my enjoyment of the story or the characters of Libby and Alex.  The pace was fast-moving, and I was surprised by not only who the culprit was that was trying to silence Libby, but some of the discoveries Libby made as well.  Alec was a stand-up guy who was honest with Libby about his suspicions, but soon saw that Libby was genuinely kind and carry, and would never intentionally hurt someone.  Libby couldn’t help but be drawn to Alec’s protective manner but tried to keep her feelings under wraps.  Libby’s need to gain her brother and sister’s approval was admirable considering how poorly they treated her.

Out of the three books in the series, I think TIDEWATER INN was my favorite.  A good read with good characters.

My Review - Seagrass Pier

SEAGRASS PIER is the second installment in the Hope Beach series.  I enjoyed the story, but must say, parts of it were confusing, and other storylines seemed to drop off without resolution.

Elin Summerall’s life of late has been filled with difficulties.  The loss of her husband and a heart transplant has brought her to Seagrass Pier, a place where she can concentrate on her recovery and building a new life for her and her daughter, Josie.  Unfortunately, that is not to be.  When Elin experiences terrifying flashbacks of events she doesn’t remember, she realizes she is witnessing her heart donor’s murder.

FBI agent, Marc Everton isn’t sure he believes Elin’s fantastical story of having her donor’s memories, but something else convinces Marc to stay close to Elin to make sure she and Josie are not in danger.  It doesn’t take long for Marc to realize the flashbacks Elin is experiencing are real and she is being stalked by a killer.  He and Elin have to filter through a list of suspects before the murderer makes good on his threat to eliminate Marc and take Elin for himself.

I enjoyed SEAGRASS PIER, but was frustrated at times by inconsistencies and dropped storylines.  I love the story that developed between Elin and Marc, and the historical background of the house, but with so many characters to keep straight, things got a bit confusing.  I felt like the drug smuggling storyline was thrown in there just for the sake of having a character planted in Elin’s house, a major discrepancy regarding Ben was a bit disappointing, and the story of a lost city was never even tied-up.  Even with all that, it was the story of Elin and Marc that kept me hooked, so the other issues were never big enough to keep me from wanting to finish the book.  But, to be honest, it did seem like there was a lack of proofing that might’ve led to these minor inconsistencies to slip through the cracks. 

 

My Review - Tears of the Sea

TEARS OF THE SEA is a fantastical story, the likes of which I have never read before!

Perdita was once a woman who dreamt of true love but the evil warlock, Forwin insists such love does not exist. Entering into a bargain with him, Perdita’s world is shattered when her beloved proves Forwin’s words true. Now cursed to swim the oceans as a mermaid, Perdita is given an opportunity every ten years to seek out this true love she so believes in.  But after three hundred years, her hope is dwindling.  Until she meets Savion. A man of exemplary noble character, Perdita is convinced he will be the one to break her curse.  But Savion is not taken with her seductions.  Perdita does everything she can conjure up to make Savion fall in love with her.  And though she feels his love, he does not concede to her immoral ways.

Savion in many ways is under his own curse.  Separated from his father and his kingdom, Savion goes about doing good, knowing one day he and his father will be reunited.  A gifted man who is led by an amulet and his heart, he goes to those in need and provides them with justice and care.  When Savion meets Perdita, he is drawn to her, but is exasperated all the same.  A siren who wishes to entangle him, he does his best to keep her safe but not give into her sensual behavior.  He knows there is more to Perdita, and doesn’t understand why she is so willingly gives herself to men.  He sees the good in her, but unfortunately, that good is buried under layers of conniving and deceit.

Perdita and Savion’s story is an allegory of Christ and those who are lost.  The more you read, the more you pick up on the subtleties Ms. Tyndall as woven into this unique love story.  This is a slight departure from MaryLu’s other novels.  Though she stays true to her passion for adventure on the high seas, she creates a world of fantasy that quickly draws you in.  I am not a reader of fantasy or Sci-fi, but I am a fan of Ms. Tyndall, so I was willing to read outside my genre.  I must say, I am glad I did.  I truly enjoyed both the story of Perdita and Savion, and the reminder that Christ loves us in spite of ourselves..  TEARS OF THE SEA is a cross between Narnia and the Little Mermaid with a rich undertow of love, redemption, and sacrifice.

TEARS OF THE SEA is a page-turner for sure!

My Review - Recipe for Love

RECIPE FOR LOVE is the second book I’ve read from Brandy Bruce, both were quite entertaining and enjoyable. 

Alison Taylor is facing an uncertain future.  Widowed, raising a young son, and running a struggling B&B, Alison has to decide if it’s time to give up on her dream. 

Chef Jeremy Mitchell needs some time away. Though he is passionate about his work, a bed and breakfast and some fishing seems like the perfect getaway.  When he arrives at the Mountain View B&B, he notices it looks a little tired, but his hostess more than makes up for that.  Immediately, Jeremy feels a connection with Alison and Nicholas, and enjoys spending time with them. 

Not thinking she could ever have feelings for another man, Alison is confused by the attraction she feels for Jeremy.  Hesitant, but wanting to pursue her feelings, she know she has to take it slow for Nicholas’ sake.  Jeremy is more than accommodating and willing to give Alison as much time as she needs-because he knows what he’s feeling is love.

I have to say, there’s something about Brandy’s writing I really enjoy.  There’s no suspense or high drama, just a simple story with genuine characters and a natural realism in their interaction.  Usually stories either lean towards suspense or are a little too sweet for me.  Somehow Brandy takes a simple story, removes the saccharine, and leaves a rich full story for the reader to enjoy.

My review - A Heartbeat Away

A HEARTBEAT AWAY by Harry Kraus was thought-provoking, suspenseful, and pulled me in at every turn.

Dr. Tori Taylor is cold, abrupt, and has no tolerance for incompetence.  She has little need for anyone but her patients.  But that’s all about to change.  After undergoing a heart transplant, Tori realizes, with chilling regret, she has no friends among her colleagues.  Alone in her recovery, Tori begins to have nightmares that feel all too real.  She also experiences a change in her emotions.  Never the expressive, touchy-feely type, Tori now finds herself crying all the time, and needing the physical touch of others.  When she realizes the hospital she works at has put her on administrative leave because of her intolerant behavior, she has no recourse but to apologize to the nursing staff and undergo counseling.  Those are the least of her worries.  Tori is convinced the nightmares she’s having are events in the life of her donor.  Tragic events.  So she begins to investigate.  Soon Tori becomes the hunted.  With the help of Phin, her counselor, she begins to unravel the events leading up to her donor’s death.

A HEARTBEAT AWAY was captivating!  Though Tori is a complete pain in the butt, she becomes a character you empathize with and only want the best for her.  Her relationship with Phin is unique and endearing and just what Tori needs.  The storyline is a bit twisted but believable, especially since Harry Kraus is a doctor.  The flow of the book is unique since Kraus highlight’s several characters that could be Tori’s donor, keeping the reader guessing until the end.  A fascinating read I would highly recommend.
