TO SEE THE SUN is the debut novel of Peggy Blann Phifer. A debut novel that shows promise.

A very pregnant Erin Macintyre is still trying to grasp what her life is going to be like now that she’s widowed and will be forced to raise a child as a single parent. What she doesn’t count on is the reappearing of Clay Buchanan, a former flame and best friend of her deceased husband, Justin Macintyre. When Clay claims Justin’s death was not an accident, and that he believes her life is in danger, Erin has no choice but to let Clay back into her life, if only for the protection of her unborn child. What follows is a gamut of incidences that can no longer be label coincidences.

Clay Buchanan has always loved Erin. When she chose to marry his best friend, he disappeared from sight, now wanting to watch the woman he loved, love another man. But when it’s clear her life is in danger, his instinctive need to protect Erin wins out over the pain he feels at her rejection.

Erin and Clay butt heads at every turn. Erin hates having Clay around because of the way he betrayed hers and Justin’s friendship years ago. But the longer he stays, the more convinced Erin is of the danger that surrounds her, and counts on him for protection and security. Struggling with the renewed spark she feels for Clay, Erin does everything she can to keep him at arm’s length. But her heart betrays her and allows him to once again breakthrough the barrier she has put up around her heart. But will it be too late?

TO SEE THE SUN had a slow start, but soon enough garnered the pace a true suspense book should have. I found some of the metaphors used by the author to be distracting or random, and the timeline of Erin’s renewed interest in Clay seemed a bit short since her husband–the love of her life–had only been dead a mere four months. But other than that, I enjoyed the story that unfolded and the numerous secondary characters. I will keep my eye out for the next installment in the Desert Faith Series.
