A PATH LESS TRAVELED, the second installment in the Miller’s Creek series by Cathy Bryant was a great follow-up to TEXAS ROADS.
Trish James, a struggling single parent is barely getting by. Losing her husband months earlier in a freak accident, she has to figure out how she and her young son, Bo, are going to make it without him. With financial troubles looming overhead, a fledging business barely surviving, and Bo suffering from all the signs of PTSD, a stubborn Trish refuses to ask her family for help. Knowing her only real solution is to move to Austin and start over, she struggles with leaving the only world she and her son have ever known.
Making things more difficult for Trish is the ever-present Andy Tyler. Andy would like nothing better than to help Trish and Bo, but Trish keeps pushing him away. Feeling as if her attraction to Andy is a dishonor to the love she shared with her husband, Trish won’t allow herself to explore her growing feelings for Andy, even though Bo has attached himself to Andy, and is slowly coming out of his shell.
A PATH LESS TRAVELED definitely hooked me faster than TEXAS ROADS. I had to take a moment to tap into my memory to remember all the players from TEXAS ROADS, but was quickly up to speed. At times, I felt Trish was being a little more stubborn than necessary. I think all mothers would sacrifice their pride for the well-being of their child, but other than that I really enjoyed the story. Andy was a great hero and perfect gentleman. If I would have anything negative to say about the Miller Creek series, I would have to say the book covers do not do the stories justice. I wouldn’t have picked up either of these books on the basis of their covers. Though the graphics are pretty, they are too benign to really express the content of the novel. These novels are not sweet strolls down memory lane, they are filled with action, drama, and real life struggles.
Another thumbs up for Cathy Bryant. I look forward to THE WAY OF GRACE, the next installment in the series.
