My Review - Placebo by Steven James

Placebo: A Jevin Banks NovelPlacebo: A Jevin Banks Novel by Steven James

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

PLACEBO is book one in the Jevin Banks Experience from Steven James.  Unique characters and incredible plots are the stars of this new series.

Jevin Banks is an illusionist and escape artist whose hung up his magic wand.  After the tragic death of his wife and twin sons, claustrophobia has made it that the confines of his illusions are too much for Jevin to handle.  Along with Charlene, his assistant, he now sets out to debunk the skills of mind readers, sleight of hand artists, and other charlatans for his television show.
While delving into a neurological research center and what it is they are studying, Devin and Charlene finds themselves in the middle of an arsonist’s fire and premeditated murder.  Realizing they are on to something on a grander scale then even they could’ve imagined, they incorporate the skills and knowledge of two of their associates. Xavier – a gadgets man and Fionna- a computer wizard lend their expertise to help expose a master plot that could change the way our military strategizes and overcomes enemies.

PLACEBO was action packed and as stimulating intellectually as it was thrilling.  Though at times I got lost in the scientific explanation for things, there always seemed to be an easy to understand summation that kept me in the loop.  Jevin, Charlene, and their cohorts were fantastical, complex, and completely entertaining while the villains were chilling and unsettling.  From a female perspective, I would’ve loved to have seen Jevin and Charlene’s relationship a little more developed.  But I can only assume their relationship will grow in the upcoming additions to this series.  While much of what was played out in the pages of PLACEBO I assume to be fiction, you can’t help but wonder where the lines of inventive writing and future reality cross.
