My Review - Maverick Heart

MAVERICK HEART by Loree Lough is pleasant but predictable.

Nurse Levee O’Reilly, along with her husband, leave Boston for Mexico where they plan to set-up a medical clinic. When her husband is killed in route, Levee finds herself alone in the small Texas town of Eagle Pass. Though, becoming a school teacher is not what she had planned for her future, she soon falls in love with her students and her new hometown. After months of being in Eagle Pass, she has a chance meeting with rancher, Daniel Neville. Not wanting to acknowledge her feelings for Daniel, Levee throws all her time into her classroom and her students.

Daniel Neville has convinced himself that bachelorhood is how he intends to spend his life. Taking care of his family’s ranch and breeding horses is what he dedicates his time to. But, when he meets Levee, his heart is reopened to the possibilities of love. Self-conscious of a limp sustained in a stampede, and still blaming himself for the death of his sister, Daniel doesn’t feel deserving of Levee’s attention, but can’t get her off his mind.

Though I enjoyed MAVERICK HEART, I am really growing tired of novels that insist on keeping the hero and heroine at arm’s length the entire book. I know that the climax of a romance book should be when these two characters finally come together, I just get tired of the constant self-deprecating monologues we have to endure as the hero and heroine continue to explain why it is they are so undeserving of the person they are falling in love with. Other than that, MAVERICK HEART was a comfortable read.
